The fact that the human cortex is exactly 6 layers deep, but in all other respects two-dimensional, is encouraging. It means that using 2D cellular automata (with synaptic connections instead of neighborhood rules) is OK. The only adjustments would be a non-linear distance metric (to account for the folds) and a bunch of off-the-plane connections from a "thalamus" or another input device.
