Numbers of synapses

In the cat visual cortex, 1 cubic mm of gray matter contains approximately 50,000 neurons, each of which gives rise on average to some 6,000 synapses, making a total of 300 million synapses. Approximately 84% are excitatory, 16% inhibitory. (SOB, p7)

A typical CA3 (cat?) hippocampal pyramidal neuron has a total dendritic length of approximately 16mm and receives approximately 25,000 excitatory synapses and fewer inhibitory synapses (SOB, p488)
